Louisiana and many Gulf Coast states have been rapidly expanding projects backing LNG (Liquified Natural Gas), which to be clear, still produces localized air pollution AND releases more GHGs (Greenhouse Gases) than coal. Due to some incredible public-facing and behind the scenes organizing, advocates have pressured the insurance company of this mega project in Cameron Parish to drop the insurance policy for this $28 billion project,

Another Economic & Cultural Pathway for Painful Sites

The memes of folks reacting to the Nottoway Plantation burning have been hilarious and somewhat cathartic, especially knowing that so many people use sites where our ancestors were enslaved and subjected to immense brutality as wedding venues (looking at you Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively 💩). Its important to not lose sight of the bigger picture and to reground these painful sites in the history of those who were enslaved and how that legacy shows up today.

For this grounding, I look to the work of Dr. Joy Banner and Jo Banner, the co-founders of The Descendants Project. Recently interviewed by WBRZ, local news channel in Baton Rouge, Dr. Banner had the following to say:

"Quite honestly, I felt that we lost a very important resource in being able to tell that history. However, as someone who has descended from people who were enslaved at plantations, you have to acknowledge that we can hold multiple emotions, especially when it comes to this history," Banner said.

"Why we are here as an organization is because of our experience growing up in the middle of what is known as plantation country which historically had hundreds of plantations along the Mississippi River and now we have about 20 or so that are historic houses and museums. However, very few of them address the legacy of slavery," Banner said.

"There is economic benefit that comes from plantation tourism right? I think where we need to balance it is how have we involved the Black descendant community?"

The Descendants Project is modeling this new paradigm, rooted in confronting the painful realities of the past, while continuing to pursue justice in the here and now. This is especially true of how they’re stewarding former plantation sites such as the Woodland Plantation to be a site honoring our ancestors and being used as a site of both education and healing.
