Where I’m from we call this a “sign of the times”. 350.org, founded by the legendary Bill McKibben, is pausing the overwhelming majority of operations. The org has financial struggles over the years but undoubtedly, the recent ~ vibe shift ~ in federal climate policy is making it difficult for many climate orgs out there.

From the article:

“In making these very tough choices, we considered a range of factors, including the political context, the relative need for 350’s work based on the strength of other actors in the ecosystem, the presence or absence of an enabling environment for civil society, and the ability to resource the work needed,” the letter said”

Pennsylvania Abandons its Leading Climate Policy by Alexander C. Kaufman for Heatmap News

The PA Gov has taken the keystone state out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative aka RGGI aka aka “Reggie” when said out loud. A very quick primer: RGGI is a regional carbon cap-and-trade program that limits the amount of carbon emissions by industry in a region, requiring those companies to buy “allowances” to emit Co2. Companies that fall under their cap are allowed to sell or “trade” their unmet allotment to facilities that need additional capacity. The sales from these trades are then used by participating RGGI states to invest in sustainable resources. As reported by Heatmap this leaves a state with a deep history of fracking and a future of potential data center burden with one less tool to enable the energy transition. 🫠 ← RGGI-less

It wasn’t until my final year in grad school where I had a labor economist professor explain that the Luddites were actually advocating for workers rights in the face of rapid technological advancement - not quite the anti-tech vibe that we caricature them as nowadays. Maybe the Luddites had a point??? 🤔

I’ve been finding that the narratives around AI to be a bit too techno-optimistic for my taste. Progress isn’t an inevitability, collectively, we must demand it and shape it. There is no doubt that there are some AI use cases that are positive. But we’re also witnessing how its being utilized in war, in mass surveillance, or even as an excuse *ahem* reason for layoffs by tech companies. And we haven’t even gotten to the impacts of these data center behemoths on energy bills, fresh water usage, and land use.

In the most surprising of places, two 2024 Nobel Prize winners from MIT have created a mini-comic that provides a clear-eyed approach to ensuring that people and especially workers can leverage this technology, our human intelligence, and political will to benefit us all.
