Who protects us when the EPA won’t? by Alessandro Hammond and Arnav Sharma for Yale Climate Connections

As all know that the EPA is looking a bit….different these days in regards in to environmental justice and holding polluters accountable. This article offers a potential solution modeled after how Canada’s provincial governments banded together to create the International Institute of for Sustainable Development to preserve environmental data and community-protecting science. Imagine if Minnesota and Massachusetts governments collaborated with EJ groups in Mississippi and Alabama to advance national-scale progress?

I recently had the opportunity to join a discussion on the book, Powerless: The People’s Struggle for Energy by Diana Hernandez and Jennifer Laird

This book makes clear that MILLIONS of Americans have to choose between heating their homes or putting food on their table. This is especially relevant as the government shutdown is preventing food from being put on the table of 42M people. This does not have to be our reality. What I appreciate about this work is that it makes the case for building a future where folks can reclaim their power. As one book summary reads:

β€œThey also suggest redesigning rates to accommodate income, promoting enrollment and expansion of discount programs, reforming utility disconnection policies, improving energy literacy, and ensuring an equitable shift to renewable energy resources.”
