The Trump Administration’s Attack on Environmental Protections Will Increase Cancer-Causing Pollution by Cathleen Kelly, Leo Banks, & Jill Rosenthal for Center for American Progress

Cancer is one of the scourges humanity faces with 600,000 people expected to die from it this year. The current admin’s policies that rollback environmental protections of refineries, heavy industry, power plants, and more is going to increase YOUR risk. This occurring while crucial funding for cancer research is being cut, potentially slowing the pace of life-saving interventions while expanding the fossil fuel empire. Remember, this was not inevitable, but the results of deliberate choices.

Climate β˜‘
Construction β˜‘
Cooperative β˜‘

In Baltimore City there’s an entire ecosystem of cooperatives, particularly those working construction, real estate, and sustainable infrastructure backed by the support of BRED, the Baltimore Roundtable for Economic Democracy. One such coop is WaterBottle, a real estate holding company that owns 25 affordable properties in West Baltimore via Rising and AFS, which does construction and renovation. These ventures have spun out additional models such a StreetWell, which is leading community-owned real estate projects with an emphasis on sustainability.

Streetwell partnered with Earth Economics to conduct an analysis of the return-on-investment of green infrastructure such as tree planting and stormwater management. Annually, this results in $110,000 worth of heat mitigation , $7,000 of flood mitigation, and $3,000 worth of social cohesion. Across all ecosystem services this results in a return of $7 for every $1 invested! πŸ€―
