Vibes: People Should Own Things βΌοΈ
On at least a weekly basis I'm coming across articles, LinkedIn clickbait of company layoffs. Seems like to no one is safe: startups, nonprofits, or publicly traded companies. I've been thinking a lot about ownership (and no I don't mean llc tw*tter) as a hedge against the disruptions caused by affordability and energy crises or our soon to be AI overlords. After all, if you own it, would you lay yourself off?

The Take: One of the common refrains from ridesharing apps and the broader gig economy is that the flexibility to earn income on-demand allows drivers to "be their own boss." How can a driver be their own boss if they don't have ownership stake in the platform? Enter Driver's Cooperative: what started as a coop startup in NYC has recently setup operations in Denver. Far from perfect, but boldly demonstrating other possibilities.
Financing the Next Generation of Owners from New Majority Capital
The Take: You may have heard of the phrase, the "silver tsunami," which names that the majority of small businesses in the U.S. are owned by baby boomers who will soon retire. The challenge is that many of the businesses will shutter if succession isn't properly handed onto to next generation. New Majority Capital invests in aspiring business owners from underrepresented backgrounds and provides them with the capital and the coaching to acquire these businesses backed by impact investors such as Common Future. NMC's model enables wealth building for the new business owner and for their employees.
"Take note of the innovation and solutions community led models are solving for and see the opportunity to radically invest and fund in economies that are deserving of access through non-extractive ways"
Sandhya Nakhasi
Co-CEO, Common Future

Candidly, I have never understood why folks in the Mid-Atlantic, especially those living in Pennsylvania or Delaware have such an obsession with Wawa (respectfully, please don't come for me). I recently learned that because of Wawa's ownership structure: the founding family own's 59% of the company and the remaining 41% is owned by an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP). Think of ESOPs as a mechanism for employees to have ownership in the company and most see this benefit via their retirement accounts. This article showed that cashiers with 15+ years at Wawa often walk away with $1M+ in their retirement accounts! Your move Buc-ee's π€π¦« (again, please don't come for me)
People should own things!
