Vibes: They're playing in our face! π€¬
Usually try to start these newsletters off with a word of encouragement but I know that y'all value the candor and the resonance that comes from keeping it 100. This week we've seen the world's first trillionaire π΅βπ«, news from the EPA, and Louisiana making it illegal to sue oil companies over climate change. <β yes this is real.
So I'm currently all of these faces at the same time because WHY are they playing in our face like this. Wealth inequality, pollution, and impacts of the climate crisis are among us. Friends, this is another reminder that we got work to do π€

The Take: In what amounts to a shocking (high bar given that it involves Louisiana) capitulation to the oil & gas industry is that the Louisiana is the fifth state following Utah, Tennessee, Iowa and Oklahoma that have made it basically legal to sue oil and gas companies for their greenhouse gas emissions and their responsibility for climate change. This is
The Take: Good news is that a federal judge in North Carolina ruled that with the EPA's termination of the Environmental Justice Block Grants, that $2.8 billion, was unlawful - but I think we all kind of knew that already. The bad news is that the judge stopped short of saying that the administration needs to reinstate those grants and return that funding to the organizations that were awarded them due to that being "impractical" because the administration had to rehire staff to adminster it. π«©
While itβs too soon to know how this ruling will impact individual grant recipients, the court has validated that our community was wrongfully deprived of these critical air monitoring resources."

This weekend brings Juneteenth and in a moment where the present feels like a lot and the future feels too far, the practice of Juneteenth invites us into a re-membering of what has come before.
Brea Baker shares some words for us via Kinfolk Tech
"What might the next 160 years look like as a result of our joint efforts? What is our agenda? And above all, can we fight for our freedom while also sharing in joy and shaking some a**?"
"If you believe in reaching back to go forward and bringing our ancestors with us into the present, you should absolutely be there on June 20th. If youβre tired of business as usual and want to get serious about reparations and land back in a we-all-win-with-accountability kind of way, then Reclamation Day is definitely for you. Step into something bigger than yourself, a movement to repair whatβs been broken and build the solidarity needed to shape what comes next.""
Check out the full piece and learn more about Reclaimation Day here:
https://kinfolktech.substack.com/p/reclaiming-juneteenth| For those of us from these areas, for those in solidarity with us, for those who want to ensure that the transition of our economy away from extraction is just — Common River is for you. |
