Vibes: Showing Up, Imperfectly πŸ˜…

There was a point last year where I would legit stay up until 2am to write these newsletters. Some of it was my own grapplings with perfectionism, but some significant portion of it was the commitment I've made to each of you reading this. A commitment to playing a small role in accessing resources, staying updated and for being a reminder of: we can have the society and economy that we dream of. How do I know? Every sub and newsletter open reminds me of this. I missed last week due to prioritizing showing up for my loved ones while juggling other aspects of life. In the flesh and over email, I'll continue showing up, imperfectly as it may be.

Support for the U.S. prioritizing renewable energy development over fossil fuels continues to decline by Brian Kennedy and Emma Kikuchi for Pew Research

The Take:  You're likely to see this article making the rounds in climate circles. 57% of Americans say that expanding wind and solar should be a priority compared to 79% in 2020. More troublng is that 42% of Americans want to increase fossil fuel production, up from 20% in 2020. A few thoughts: much of this is being driven by dramatic sentiment changes for conservative leaning voters so not quite the plurality of Americans. Additionally, have y'all gotten has recently? Its wild out there. To me, this shifting perspectives make me wonder how much the affordability crisis is driving these sentiments where people are just looking for a reprireve wherever they can get it?

Resisting the Data Center Boom: Small towns are taking on Big Techβ€”and some are winning by Michaela Brant and Kaitlyn Salazar for The Progressive Magazine

The Take:  Big tech hyperscale data centers are beginning to face lots of blowback from smaller, rural communities all over the country. It turns out that people care about where they live and don't appreciate being steamrolled. In other words, "they better come correct"!

"They have socialized their infrastructure and privatized their profits on our backs, and that pisses everybody off...they cannot hide from that reality."

Elena Schlossberg
Executive Director, Coalition to Protect Prince William County

A story that caught my eye was the story of Lisa Morer in King County, WA. Her story of facing rising energy bills show how local and state governments can continue to make material improvements in our lives. That is, if they have the imagination, conviction and political will to do so.

Moorer stands in her kitchen cradling her dog Kimi in her arms as Dozer, a pup she dogsits, looks on. Chona Kasinger for The Margin. Image source: https://themargin.us/features/insulating-the-energy-poverty-gap

For those of us from these areas, for those in solidarity with us, for those who want to ensure that the transition of our economy away from extraction is just β€” Common River is for you.
