Vibes: Taking The Long View
Am I the only one who gets real impatient? Whether its the job hunt, launching new projects, or even thinking about the big picture of a just transition - I come back to the question: when will it be our day in the sun?
In short, I don't know (if you do, pls email me)!
And thats alright - the challenges have been compounded for generations and maybe we're all on a collective, generational project to create the society we want. I'm slowly, if sometimes begrudgingly taking the long view and resisting the urge of speed for speed's sake.
What's been working for y'all?
This is how I be feeling sometimes though ππΎπ«£π

The Take: The sun is SUN-ing in Texas! π The state is projected to have 78 BILLION kWh from solar compared to 60 billion from coal with little signs of slowing down. Pretty remarkable for a state largely captured by oil & gas industry and should be a challenge to other markets to accelerate renewable build out. What was that about a green new s*am???
The Take: It's frustrating to see so many descendant communities having to combat their own governments (at all levels) to just be able to live in peace and with dignity. Despite this, the Gullah Geechee people are fighting to preserve their land and not have it sold to the highest bidders. I'm in awe of their tenacity, their love of their culture, their home, and the drawing on collective memory to create a future that is worthy of them.
"When we talk about emancipation, we talk about it as if the people didnβt take part in their emancipation, but the people did. My ancestors did,β he said. βYou donβt hear the stories about the ancestors that resisted, that fought, vehemently against slavery. Our faith, our belief, is what keeps us going."

I've recently came across this piece (white paper) that is a collab between Native Americans in Philanthropy, Packard Foundation and the Biodiversity Funders Network. The paper lays out a framework for how institutions such as state or federal governments or philanthrophy can partner with tribal nations via co-stewardship model to more effectively steward ocean and marine waters in the United States. For some of us this may evoke a resounding "duh, why wouldn't we do that?" but for others we know that there are so many obstacles and misalignment that prevent such partnerships for happening.
I'm reflecting on this chart as a great framework for thinking about this type of engagement, not just in marine and ocean work but across sectors and issue areas.
This paper lays out core priniciples required to equitably embark on a co-stewardship and co-management model.
1. Recognizing Aboriginal hunting and fishing rights
2. Recognizing Tribal sovereignty
3. Recognizing the duty to consult
4. Recognizing Indigenous Knowledge
Y'all check out the paper: Tribal Co-Stewardship and Co-Management of U.S. Ocean and Marine Waters
In this brave new world of ours, we're going to need new models to approach how we steward our resources and manage our relationships to each other and to our planet. I suspect that that many of these new innovative models aren't actually new at all, but a going back to the way we used to be, trusting local knowledge, and recognizing how we're bound up with each other.
"The time might be βripeβ, or we might be running out of βpolitical timeβ, but, the perspective of the Tribe is time immemorial."
