VIBES: Its not alright, but we gon be ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ ๐ฅ
Thereโs no getting around or sugarcoating around the particularly dystopian feeling in the US: masked ๐ง rounding up and killing folks, increased lawlessness from fossil fuel companies, and an economy that works for the wealthy elite. Donโt gaslight yourself, the world is indeed on fire. Iโm confident in our future, not because of our so-called leaders, but because we got us.

I donโt know how to do this by Emily Atkin for HEATED
The Take: Environmental justice, state violence, economic inequality, these polycrises are all interconnected. They want us overwhelmed and to disengage, as Emily writes, โF*ck them and f*ck thatโ.
โClimate change is state violence, too
When I get into these funks, itโs like I start believing that climate change is something separate from state violenceโand itโs not.
The climate chaos weโre experiencing now, and what we will continue to experience, is a direct, conscious choice by the state to allow certain people to die. It kills through heatwaves, asthma, hunger, and displacement instead of bullets and batons, but the logic behind both is identical: certain people, mostly brown, can be sacrificed.
I always need to remind myself that these are not two separate emergencies competing for attention, but one story unfolding on different timelines. That helps reignite the fire to continue.โ

The Domestic Global South and The Need for Climate and Environmental Internationalism by Anthony Karefa Rogers-Wright for Black Agenda Report
The Take: While the U.S. is in disarray, donโt forget the global linkages to what weโre experiencing, from the Gulf Coast to the Middle East to South America, the path forward to a more just, equitable world is through centering principles, people, and the movements at the center of environmental justice.

Rest is essential (I believe in it and Lord knows I need it)! However, there is a fine line between restful retreat and a disengagement that comes from a learned helplessness. You have agency as an individual. Even more as a collective. Tressie McMillan Cottomโs words remind us that passivity isnโt an antidote; action is.
For those of us from the frontlines, for those in solidarity with us, for those who want to ensure that the transition of our economy away from extraction is into a regenerative one where we all have sustainable, prosperous futures โ Common River is for you.
Thank you for being here.
In solidarity,
